Black Crowned Night Herons at Palace of Fine Arts Lagoon

Published by SFAlice under Bay Area Photo Ops

img_8432palace-of-fine-artsweb500.jpgThis is a good time to get nice detailed pictures of Black Crowned Night Herons as they perch in the tree at the north end of the lagoon. The tree, leafless in December, has been their home for years. They look like candles as they sit upright on the bare branches. Later in the year, they will be camouflaged by thick greenery. Reflections from the lagoon can add to the fun. But late afternoon brings shadows to the tree. Majestic swans are a bonus. There is usually good parking on Baker Street. Here’s a map

New meeting formats for 2008

Published by JimK under Photochrome Camera Club

Our new Open Pictorial night may have entries on any subject: creative, nature, PJ, travel, or pictorial. Members must be present when their images are shown. No outside judges will be present. It’s strictly a group discussion. No record will be kept of entries. Open Pictorials are not competitions.

Theme Nights are meant to encourage our members to get out and shoot new subjects, look at our world a little differently in their every day pursuits, and find an original way to present the Theme Subject. The first one is “Water.” Let’s save fog and clouds for another time, and concentrate on – well – water!

Print night

Published by JimK under Club Events

Starting off the evening, Richard Zimmerman will show a presentation on Soft Proofing. This should lead to an interesting discussion of how to best translate the image one sees on the computer screen onto a photographic print.  It seems that many times the color intensity and saturation of an image doesn’t accurately translate to paper.  One solution is known as soft proofing.

Photochrome Print makers will then display their prints in the following categories: Color Pictorial, Monochrome Pictorial, Travel, and Creative.  Print Chair, Alan Heald, will lead this discussion.  It should be interesting to see what our print makers have been up to for the past several months!

Finally, Alan Heald plans to set up a lap top and a Wacom tablet, so that those interested can try out this very useful and creative tool.

It appears that this will be a very interesting evening, even for those who do not currently make prints.

The evening will begin with a short program on Still Life Photography using that handy gadget called a light tent.  Alice Steele will show examples of the technique and exhibit the simple equipment needed.

Then the evening will be turned over to  B. K. Srinivas and Alan Heald who will take you on a photo safari to Africa. On this evening each of them will be showing the highlights of their respective trips to Kenya and to South Africa.
