Photochrome Camera Club

San Francisco Photography Club: Established 1942

Archive of Club Instructions

There has been a Photochrome Flickr group for a few years but it has been neglected and I don’t think many current users know about it. I’d encourage any current Photochrome members to join the group especially if you’re already Flickr members.

If you’ve been living under a rock for the last few years, Flickr is the leading photo sharing site and it’s part of the Yahoo empire (if you already have a Yahoo account you don’t even have to create a separate Flickr account). It’s free tojoin and share up to 200 pictures. If you want more than that then there is a modest annual fee. Flickr is like the world’s biggest camera club: you can make friends there or connect with people you already know. There are also ‘groups‘ on every subject possible that you can join and add your pictures too to share with other group members. A group also has a discussion forum associated with it. As the Photochrome website doesn’t have a dedicated forum associated with it I suggest we use the Flickr Photochrome Group discussion forum so that we can talk amongst ourselves.

If you add your pictures you the group you will notice that they will be displayed in a Flickr widget in the sidebar of this site (look to the right). I hope members will take advantage of the Photochrome Flickr Group specifically and Flickr in general to find a supportive photo community between meetings. If you have any questions of concerns please raise them in the comments of this post and I’ll do my best to address them. See you on Flickr.

Golden Hour at the Building Site

Over Thanksgiving your Photochrome web team has spent many hours redesigning your Photochrome site. The predominant purpose was to move from a 3 column, to a 2 column layout that would accommodate media files better – this is a photography club after all. While we are doing this we are taking the time to re-categorize the organization of data somewhat and to restyle the display into something more conducive for the display of photography.

After all this time and effort there is no more rewarding comment than “I liked the old site better. Can we go back to that?” Well yes and no. If the club wants to remain contemporary then its site must reflect that. That said we are sympathetic to those members who complain that reading grey text on a black background doesn’t work for them. To aid these members we have implemented a style switcher in the sidebar. The default for the site will remain the new style but if you want to stick with the  old site style you can select that. Fair warning: the old site will not display the new, larger images very cleanly – this was one of the main reasons for changing. After seeing how much better it looks, if you want to switch back to the new style just select the default style again. We hope that this compromise works for all our members.

This past year during Photochrome
meetings I’ve listened
to a number of conflicting
comments about
where a photographer
stands with regard to the
Right of Privacy. Even
though I thought I was already
knowledgeable on this
subject, I decided to go
ahead and do a bit of research.

These are the instructions for using the free program Picasa to resize your images for submission for electronic projection at any Photochrome meetings, presentations or competitions. If you’re new to Picasa you might want to read some of the Getting Started Guide to find you feet in the program. Picasa is owned by Google and is an image management/browser piece of software that has some limited editing capabilities.

The proceedure for using Picasa to re-size you images for submission is as follows:

  • Browse to the image you want to re-size and select it
  • Menu: File > Export to Folder
  • Choose the file location you want the reduced size file to be created in
  • “Resize to” 1024 (use the slider of the field to enter this value)
  • Quality should be set to “Automatic” or “Maximum”.
  • Press the Export button
  • Picasa will generate the small file  and it will automatically open up the results directory when it completes the process
  • Rename the image file according to Photochrome file naming standards.
  • Start your email program and address a new message to photochromeprojectionist@gmail.com
  • Attach the file you just renamed to this email and submit it
  • In a few minutes you should receive a confirmation email from photochrome documenting your successful submission.

If anything is unclear please comment here and we will try to address you issues.
