Curvature

Junkyard photography! That’s what this field trip is all about. We have three acres to wander through photographing all sorts of building materials and household goods to electronic equipment and musical instruments. The list goes on and on. Half of this recycling center in indoors while the rest lies in stacks or piles outside.

Let’s get there no later than 9:30 AM before the crowds arrive. Flashes and tripods are alright although I recommend a monopod due to tight spaces at times.

Directions: Urban Ore Eco Park is located at 900 Murray Street in Berkeley 94710.

  • Take I-80 East over the Bay Bridge, towards Berkeley.
  • Exit right after Emeryville at Exit 10 to merge onto CA 13 S/Ashby Avenue.
  • Turn right on 7th Street at the first signal.
  • Immediately turn left onto Murray Street.

“You have arrived at your destination “. Look up to your right and see the big sign on the building “Urban Ore Eco Park”. Sometime between 11:00 – 11:30, let’s go to The Berkeley Bowl Café at 920 Heinz Avenue, just a few blocks away for Peet’s coffee and/or other goodies . There is a parking lot on the left side of Heinz Street for Berkeley Bowl customers.

See you there, Gary Larsen

Exploring photography this month will include a presentation of creating and using masks in both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. Masks are a powerful tool that can be used to restrict the area an adjustment layer affects or to cut out an item to be used in composite image. The trick is being able to create and use masks without your viewer being able to tell that you did anything.

In addition we will project images from the Civic Center and Asian Art Museum field trip.

Send your digital images by midnight Wednesday to: Photochromeprojectionist@gmail.com

Mark your images:

  • Category*-First Name-Last Name-Title. Jpg

*categories are:

  • Pic2 (up to 2 images taken on Field Trips )

Please note: digital images should be re-sized so that the longest side is no more than 1024 pixels. That is how they fit properly on our projection equipment.

For more information please also see:

If you missed Martin’s presentation, or you wanted to review part of it, or you fell asleep towards the end here it is. Backup strategies is the least sexy subject for a photography presentation but it is hugely important to anyone whose data is valuable to them. This whole presentation can be summed up in the following take away points:

  • All data should be copied on to three disks in at least 2 physical locations.
  • You must have a daily, incremental, automatic backup: if it’s a manual process you will neglect it.
  • You must make a regular off-site backup.
  • You must periodically test, review and revise your backup strategy.

With January is coming rapidly to a close, it appears that Photochrome’s first Print Night of 2011 will only be a month and a half away! For me, at least, this means that it’s time to start thinking about seeing if the old Epson is still working.

After my surgery, I have mostly been dealing with trying to get my legs back into some kind of shape. Unfortunately this has meant that for three months I really haven’t been doing much photography of any kind. Not good!

After coming back from the Civic Center field trip yesterday with some interesting images, I’m now all excited…. and find myself getting the “bug” to begin selecting candidate images for turning into prints.

I hope that this note will serve to remind each of you to begin thinking about what prints you intend to show at the meeting on March 17th.

I know that I’m looking forward to what is usually an interesting and fun event.

Yours, Alan Heald, Print Chair

PS If you have ideas for making the meetings even better, feel free to write me (AHealdSF@aol.com).

The location offers several photo opportunities both indoors and out in the plaza. City Hall, War Memorial, Veterans Building, Symphony Hall, Public Library (inside and out), Bill Graham Civic Auditorium and of course the Asian Art Museum are buildings to check out. The plaza is also a place of gathering for some people you might want to photograph. Every Saturday a fair is held near the civic center bart station with lots of interesting photographic elements.

Entrance fee to the Asian Art Museum is $12 for adults and $8 for seniors. Unfortunately no tripods, monopods or flash photography are allowed. Photos cannot be taken in special exhibit galleries. This museum is an option in case it rains or cold weather comes our way. However, we could meet in the Asian Art Museum cafe for tea around 11:30 AM. There is no fee to go only to the cafe. I’m taking Muni to get there. If you want to drive, park in the civic center garage.

See you there,
