Photochrome Adventures: Golden Gate Park – Stow Lake and Vicinity 07/20/2013

The fourth Photochrome Adventures field trip for 2013 will be on Saturday 20 July 2013 in Golden Gate Park at Stow Lake and other photo op locations in the vicinity.

Meet up time will be 9:30am at the de Young Museum Cafe on Tea Garden Drive in Golden Gate Park. After the shoot we will meet back at the de Young Cafe between 11:30am and 12 Noon.to discuss our photography and have a show-and-tell session.

That meet up time is flexible to allow for walking travel time between photo op locations.

Stow Lake has many interesting subjects: the rustic bridges, the Chinese Pagoda, the boat rides, and of course the wildlife such as birds, turtles and strolling humans. The vicinity around Stow Lake also has some very interesting photo ops too. Such as the Rose Garden, the Japanese Tea Garden, de Young Museum and the Concourse.

If you arrive by car there is a parking lot under the Concourse by the California Academy of Sciences.
For those using public transit the MUNI 44 bus line stops almost directly in front of the de Young Cafe.

Photochrome Adventures Field Trip Saturday June 15, 2013 University of California San Francisco Mission Bay Campus.

The third Photochrome Adventures field trip of 2013 will be at the UCSF Mission Bay Campus in San Francisco on Saturday 15 June 2013.

Meet up time will be 9 am at Peasant Pies at 550-C Gene Friend Way just off 3rd Street on the Plaza of the UCSF Mission Bay campus. You can’t miss Peasant Pies because in the plaza in front of the store are two huge 70 ton vertical iron monolith sculptures. One of them is leaning 18 degrees to the North and the other is leaning 18 degrees to the South. Each is 49 feet 2 inches tall,14 feet wide and five inches deep. They just might be a good photo op? After our shoot we can return to Peasant Pies at about 11:30 am for discussion, show and tell and for some refreshments. They have good meat, veggie and fruit pot pies, sweets and drinks. They also have a huge solid wooden table there that seats 14 persons.

The UCSF Mission Bay campus, now 10 years old, is a treasure trove of architectural photo ops. Though it would be fair to say the majority of subjects may be architectural, including interesting views of the San Francisco skyline, there are many interesting people on campus too. Also outside and inside the buildings there are many pieces of contemporary art.
The UCSF – Mission Bay campus is easy to reach by car or public transit. The Metro T line from Metro stations in the Avenues, on Market Street or the Embarcadero stops right at the campus at the Mission Bay station which is only a half block walk to Peasant Pies.

We shall look forward to seeing you for the third Photochrome Adventures field trip of 2013 at the UCSF – Mission Bay Campus in San Francisco on Saturday 15 June 2013 at 9 am at Peasant Pies.

I did the tour last month and found docents still give presentations at various locations on the tour that last long enough  to allow plenty of time for photography. However our guide made it clear that he did not want persons to straggle.

HERE is the Paramount Theater web site. It has complete information about the theater, contact numbers and directions on how to get to the Paramount Theater from anywhere in the Bay Area.

From San Francisco, BART is an easy way to get there. For example it is about a 16 minute trip on the Pittsburg / Bay Point line from Montgomery Street in San Francisco to 19th Street in Oakland. That station is only a half block from the Paramount.

If you drive, there is a parking lot next to the Paramount. It is $1.00 per 20 minutes. The large city lot across the street as I recall costs $2 per hour.

We look forward to seeing  you all as the curtain goes up on the second PHOTOCHROME ADVENTURES field trip of 2013 at the Paramount Theater in Oakland. Saturday 20 April 2013 at 9:45 am.

Photochrome Adventures: The Haight

The first PHOTOCHROME ADVENTURES field trip this year will be on Saturday 16 February 2013.

It will be a neighborhood location: The Haight.

The photographing area will be on Haight St. from Scott St. to Stanyan St. The eleven blocks take in the lower and upper Haight.

Meet-up time is 9am at The Grind coffeehouse, on the south side of the street at 783 Haight St. off Scott St.

We can have refreshments and discuss plans and leave about 9:30 am.

If you don’t want to walk the whole distance or find the photo ops sparse in the Lower Haight you can get a MUNI 6 or 71 bus along Haight St.

There are some interesting architectural photo ops along the route from Divisadero Street, including the edge of Buena Vista Park starting at Baker St. to Central St.

Of course the more famous, colorful and funky Upper Haight is loaded with unlimited photo subjects: architectural, artistic and human.

Meet-up time for the post-shoot-show-and-tell ( or don’t tell ) discussion will be 11:30 am at People’s Cafe also on the south side of the street at 1419 Haight St. off Masonic St.

We shall hope to see you all for the first PHOTOCHROME ADVENTURES field trip of 2013 as we go: In search of great photographs.

Civil War Event at Fort Point 08/18/2012

Lets visit the fort sometime between 10am and 5pm to photograph the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry performing military drills every hour on the hour as well as on-going demonstrations of everyday activities that occurred in an army garrison during the 1800’s. Here is a chance for club members to shoot photos of Fort Point including individuals wearing appropriate epic union and civilian attire

Directions: The area is under construction due to the replacement of Doyle Drive so follow the Crissy Field detour signs to Old Mason Street upon entering the Presidio. If you are coming from Marina Blvd., just continue straight onto Old Mason Street. Park in the lot just past the Warming Hut or in the parking lot in front of Stillwell Hall. Additional parking is behind the Hall under the overpass. (Presidio detour signs say “Mason Street”, but should say “Old Mason Street”).
