3/23/2018 Field Trip to the Palace of Fine Arts

On March 23rd we will have another field trip, this time to  the Palace of Fine Arts located at 3601 Lyon Street in  the Marina District off highway 101 near the Golden Gate Bridge. Outdoor photos are possible at every angle. Its beauty stands out against the sky and is reflected in the nearby pond. The Palace of Fine Arts was built for the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition, a world fair to honor the completion of the Panama Canal that followed the devastation of the 1906 earthquake and fire.  It was rebuilt in 1965, and renovation of the lagoon, walkways, and a seismic retrofit were completed in early 2009. The site features a classical Roman rotunda with curved colonnades in an idyllic park setting. In addition, the immaculate landscape is breathtaking with a variety of plant and animal life on the grounds with gorgeous swans gracing us with their presence.

Lets meet at 9 am, take photos then around 11 am walk over to the Starbucks located at 1 Letterman Drive in the Presidio (the Letterman Digital and New Media Arts Center, headquarters of Lucasfilm).

02/22/2018 Field Trip

On Thursday 02/22/2018 our Photochrome Club will have a field trip to the Golden Gate Park where we can photograph anything you like, (plants, flowers, structures, vehicles and even tourists). Hopefully there will be a few cherry blossoms. For this reason lets meet in front of the Japanese Tea Garden at 9:30 AM, then we’ll decide to either go inside the garden or check out the Botanical  Garden across the street. Lets gather at the de Young Museum Café around 11:15 AM for coffee. If it’s a nice day, we can sit outside in the court.

01/18/2018: A View of the Brazilian Pantanal by Gary Larsen

The Pantanal is a vast, seasonally flooded wetland extravagantly populated with a rich diversity of birds and other wildlife. Although challenging to access by land in the rainy season, the  abundant biodiversity of the enormous wetland savannah may be readily observed by the intrepid dry season visitor. Join me in this presentation on my six day trip to the Pantanal where I photographed several species of birds and other animals such as the capivara, coati, and yacare caiman. I will talk about how to get there, what to take, when to go and where to stay:  http://www.sescpantanal.com.br

Wide Angles and Long Lenses – 05/18/2017

Photographer

On Thursday May 18th at 7:30pm, Photochrome is holding an Exploring Photography night. Members Stacy Boorn and Alan Heald will be sharing  the presentation as they talk about “Wide Angles…and Long Lenses”.  The two of them will be discussing the photographic pros and cons of using these two very different lenses.

In this age of “selfies”, instantaneous exposures, and zoom lenses, it is all too easy to get caught up in the business of capturing an image without applying much thought to either the camera or to the lens. Obviously, the choice of lens is a major part of the deal! There are reasons to select either one of these two types of lenses, and there are also reasons why one’s first lens choice may not be the best!

We hope to have questions from the audience, followed by some interesting discussion. It should be an interesting evening.

Presentation on Greenland – 01/19/2017

greenlandI have always been fascinated with Greenland with it’s isolation and somewhat mystifying land. I got a chance to see this Arctic country a couple of years ago; it’s extremely beautiful with magnificent scenery.  Come and see for yourselves at our 01/19/2017 meeting.
