The California Academy of Science will be having a last quarterly free Sunday of the year on December 9, 2012 with its new theme: “Tis the Season for Science”. You don’t have to be a San Francisco resident. Consequently, people from all over the bay area and beyond take advantage of this event, so get there early. Be sure to see “Earthquake: Evidence of a Restless Planet”, now showing at Morrison Planetarium. Get some great shots of birds and butterflies in the rain forest dome as well as fish and other aquatic creatures in the Steinhart Aquarium. At 11:30 am and 2:30 pm, you can photograph a diver inside the aquarium interacting with the crowd. Another photo op is when an Academy biologist feeds the African Penguin colony at 3 pm. The Academy opens at 11:00 am on Sundays and is located at 55 Music Concourse Drive in Golden Gate Park. For more information go to http://www.calacademy.org/

This fun event starts at 1:00pm on Saturday, November 10, 2012. Flugtag means “flying day” in German to celebrate the many brave men, who down through the ages built and flew, or not, their human-powered flying machines.
36 teams with their homemade vehicles will compete by launching themselves off a 30-foot high pier to soar as far as possible before crashing into the bay.
Contestants will be judged by their flight’s distance, creativity and showmanship. You can probably get some good shots depending on where you are standing. A large crowd is expected, so try to get their early.
It all takes place at Mc Covey Cove, 3rd Street / Terry A. Francois Blvd., in San Francisco next to the AT & T Park.

Lets visit the fort sometime between 10am and 5pm to photograph the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry performing military drills every hour on the hour as well as on-going demonstrations of everyday activities that occurred in an army garrison during the 1800’s. Here is a chance for club members to shoot photos of Fort Point including individuals wearing appropriate epic union and civilian attire

Directions: The area is under construction due to the replacement of Doyle Drive so follow the Crissy Field detour signs to Old Mason Street upon entering the Presidio. If you are coming from Marina Blvd., just continue straight onto Old Mason Street. Park in the lot just past the Warming Hut or in the parking lot in front of Stillwell Hall. Additional parking is behind the Hall under the overpass. (Presidio detour signs say “Mason Street”, but should say “Old Mason Street”).
