Judged Night with special guest and judge Dick Stahlke

Dick has been photographing seriously since about 1993 & has studied with many of the best, including Freeman Patterson, Galen Rowell, George Lepp, Eddie Soloway, & Neil Chaput de Saintonge. Beyond the technical aspects of good photography, Dick soon realized that the best of photographic expression emanates from within oneself. It communicates the essence of the subject in some way, using principles of design, lighting & perspective to elicit a response from the viewer. The attempt to achieve in an image what he wants to see & wants to communicate is a constant challenge. He feels that judging will be a similar challenge, beginning with the craft of photography & looking for greater meaning & interpretation in the photographic expression of others.

Print Night

Print Night moderated by Alan Heald

The last Print Night for this year takes place on Thursday, September 16th. After that, the next Print Night won’t be held until March, next year! So, if you have something to show the group, there is still some time to get busy and make a few prints for display.

Print Chair, Alan Heald, says that “this has been a very good year for Photochrome’s print makers”. Alan reports that “not only the evenings have featured excellent work, perhaps even more gratifying has been the enthusiasm shown by everyone who attend these events.” Print making at Photochrome is alive and well!

Even for those of you who don’t yet make prints for display, it’s quite possible that you just might enjoy coming to this event and see what the rest of us are up to.

Field Trip: Washington Sq.

Published by mtaylor under Club Events

September 18, 2010
9:00 amto12:00 pm
Buongiorno! We are off to Italy, or at least to San
Francisco’s North Beach for the Photochrome field trip on
Saturday 18 September 2010. We will meet at about 9 am in
Washington Square Park in front of the statue of Ben
Franklin.
Here is a map of the area showing the boundaries of the
shoot. The little enclave at the bottom of the map from
showing Powell Street on the West, Jackson Street on the
South and Kearny to the East allows the inclusion of at least
three historical San Francisco sites. The City Lights
Bookstore; Jack Kerouac Alley and the Vesuvius Coffee
House just South of Broadway on Columbus Ave.
I believe this is the only field trip that I have been on at
which one can photograph the entire field trip area. Just
jump on a MUNI 39 bus at Washington Square an in about
10 minutes you can be at Coit Tower from the top of which
you can photograph the entire area of North Beach. Also
with its 360 degree view the entire North part of the City and
the East Bay are available to your lens. Speaking of MUNI
North Beach is accessible easily by bus from any part of The
City. It is served by MUNI lines: 8X, 30, 30X 41, 45, 39 and
the Powell and Mason and Powell and
Hyde cable car lines.
The photo ops in North Beach are
too numerous to list them all in this
article but here are a few general
and specific ones: Cable cars, two
tattoo parlors, numerous interesting
coffee houses, two world class
churches, classic view of the Trans America Pyramid looking
down Columbus Ave., funky and chic upper Grant Avenue
and of the course people of North Beach.
If you choose to get to Washington Square Park earlier
that the 9am meeting time, about 7:30 to 8am you might see
the group of Tai Chi ladies doing their routine with their very
real looking four foot swords. You’d best use a long lens
though as they really move those blades.
If you are really lucky you might see and photograph the
elder man who is a Mark Twain look-alike named Vince who
carries of picture of Twain in his coat pocket.
He is shown on this web site: http://
www.bpnelsonimages.com/images/galleries/
favorite_images/people_adults_vincetwain.htm
After the shoot about 11:30 am we will meet at C.Cavelli
coffee house on Stockton Street at Columbus Avenue for
refreshments and a discussion of our morning in… Italy.
Ciao.. until Saturday 18 September 2010.
