The California Academy of Science will be having a last quarterly free Sunday of the year on December 9, 2012 with its new theme: “Tis the Season for Science”. You don’t have to be a San Francisco resident. Consequently, people from all over the bay area and beyond take advantage of this event, so get there early. Be sure to see “Earthquake: Evidence of a Restless Planet”, now showing at Morrison Planetarium. Get some great shots of birds and butterflies in the rain forest dome as well as fish and other aquatic creatures in the Steinhart Aquarium. At 11:30 am and 2:30 pm, you can photograph a diver inside the aquarium interacting with the crowd. Another photo op is when an Academy biologist feeds the African Penguin colony at 3 pm. This fun event starts at 1:00pm on Saturday, November 10, 2012. Flugtag means “flying day” in German to celebrate the many brave men, who down through the ages built and flew, or not, their human-powered flying machines.
36 teams with their homemade vehicles will compete by launching themselves off a 30-foot high pier to soar as far as possible before crashing into the bay.
Contestants will be judged by their flight’s distance, creativity and showmanship. You can probably get some good shots depending on where you are standing. A large crowd is expected, so try to get their early.
It all takes place at Mc Covey Cove, 3rd Street / Terry A. Francois Blvd., in San Francisco next to the AT & T Park.
