Yerba Buena Gardens & Vicinity Field Trip
By Gary Larsen
Tripods are OK.
Let’s meet in the Esplanade off Mission Street. This large downtown oasis, bounded by Mission, Folsom, Third and Fourth Streets, offers an array of photographic subjects. Buildings such Metreon, Center for the Arts and Zeum are good architectural elements to photograph especially when combined with water features and gardens. San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) on Third Street and the Contemporary Jewish Museum off Mission Street are facades to include in compelling photographs.
Several statues and sculptures such as the Green Glass Ship, Shaking Man and Urge make interesting subjects. However, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial tops them all with its majestic fifty foot waterfall that can be made to look silky by using a longer shutter speed. Most images can be captured from several gardens situated throughout the complex and from the Yerba Buena rooftop where the Zeum Carousel and San Francisco Children’s Museum are located.
We will meet after our shoot at one of the many cafés in the area at 11:45am. My suggestion is Café on the Square in the Contemporary Jewish Museum. (No entrance fee for café, only metal detector screen.)
