Exploring Photography: Kenya; the Danube

Published by REZ under Club Events

February 19, 2009
7:30 pmto9:30 pm

Tonight, we travel. Connie Louie and Alan Heald have these treats in store for us.
Connie in Kenya:
Kenya is a country about the size of Texas that has preserved much natural land in reserves and parks. Join me in a photo slideshow to three very best areas in the country. First, to Samburu National Reserve,
northwest of Nairobi, where the ever illusive leopards live along with large numbers of elephants
and five species that are not found anywhere else in Kenya: gerenuk gazelle, reticulated
giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, the Somali ostrich, and the oryx. Second, south of Samburu, to Lake Nakuru where there are thousands of flamingos along the lakeside with pelicans, fish eagles, rhinos, and buffalos. And lastly, the crown jewel of Kenya, to Masai Mara where cheetahs, lions, and leopards are frequently found.
Alan on the Danube:
Alan and his wife Carol, flew to Europe for a two week cruise down the Danube. They began near Prague, Czechoslovakia, and ending up in Budapest, Hungary. Images reveal the interesting scenery along the way as the ship navigated the hundreds of locks which make navigation possible. One side trip
featured a sobering trip to an infamous Nazi concentration camp, Terezenstadt, which is now maintained as a holocaust museum.

The remainder of the journey was much happier fare, as we traveled down the river through Czechoslovakia, Germany, Austria and Hungary.

Field Trip :The Ferry Building & Farmers Market (Date Change)

February 21, 2009
9:30 amto11:30 am

Meet in front of the Ferry Building at 9:30. It’s located at the foot of Market Street and is accessible in all directions by MUNI with a short walk across the Embarcadero Plaza. This historic building opened in 1898 as a focal point for East Bay and Marin residents arriving and departing from San Francisco. Today it offers a unique location where dedicated merchants, regional farmers and ranchers provide wholesome food products. The marketplace is situated outdoors in front and back of the Ferry Building giving good natural lighting. Flash attachments may be necessary for indoor shoots where movement of people is unavoidable. This field trip offers opportunity for diverse types of photography such as architectural, commercial, abstract, macro, flowers and candid. Hope to see you there.

Mission Statement

Mission Statement

The Photochrome Camera Club of San Francisco was formed to provide an opportunity for members with a wide range of experience and interests to meet regularly to share, acquire, and develop photographic skills in a supportive and friendly environment where they can explore the potential of all aspects of photography.

To achieve these goals Photochrome uses the following tools:

-Website: The website http://www.photochrome.org serves as a hub for all of the club’s information, keeping members up to date on all the club’s activities, future and past as well as exhibiting member’s work.

-Newsletter: Photochrome publishes the award winning monthly “Color News” newsletter in both printed and electronic media to inform club members of recent activities, future events and news of photographic interest.

-Club Meets: Photochrome members meet twice a month, on the first and third Thursday of each month for image commentary (open, theme and judged), education nights, field trips, end of year competition and annual banquet. The second Thursday of every month is reserved for board meetings.

a) Image commentary nights are held on the first Thursday of every month. Members meet, show images and comment them in an open forum format.
These events can be separated in three categories:

• ‘Open’ nights are held on the first Thursday of the first month of a quarter and members are free to choose a subject matter. Format: projected digital and 35mm slides.

• ‘Theme’ nights’ are held on the first Thursday of the second month of a quarter. The subject matter has been previously decided and posted. Format: projected digital and 35mm slides.

• ‘Judged’ nights are held on the first Thursday of the third month of a quarter and a judge (commentator from outside the club) provides an analysis of each image after which a number of images will be selected by the judge as deserving special recognition. Format: projected digital and 35mm slides.

• ‘Print’ nights are printed image commentary nights held on the third Thursday of the third month of a quarter with emphasis on printing techniques and challenges.

b) Board Meetings will be held on the second Thursday of every month. Club members are welcome to join board members in discussing club business.

c) ‘Exploring Photography’ nights

EP Nights are held on the third Thursday of every first and second month of a quarter (however, the third month is reserved for Print Night). EP nights may consist of lectures and slideshow presentations by members or outside speakers, photographic workshops, Computer tutorials, documentary screenings or any other event that may help club members share and expand their photographic skills.

d) Field trips

Field Trips are usually held on a Saturday morning. Members will have the chance to explore a local hotspot and share in the field tricks, techniques and just have a good old time!!!

e) End of Year Competition

Held in mid November the Photochrome ImageFest is designed for those members that enjoy the competition side of a Camera Club. It is an all day event with great Photos, external judges, snacks and lots of prizes.

f) Annual banquet

Photochrome usually says goodbye to the year holding a celebratory banquet in mid December. Good food, good company and a slide show with members images.
