Photochrome Camera Club

San Francisco Photography Club: Established 1942

We’ve had some exciting and interesting meetings lately at Photochrome. The new format is one that combines the exploration of photography with sharing ideas. And then there’s the enjoyable experience of viewing and learning from each other’s images.

In the last two months, we’ve learned such technical data as how to make a Polaroid Transfer, how a Digital Camera works, and how to use a Light Tent to control light in a setup

We’ve also learned that a ‘pussy cat’ of a lion can turn into a snarling bundle of rage in one instant. One of our members captured that moment and shared it with us. That night, we also learned a big elephant with mayhem on its mind could be dissuaded by driving the target safari vehicle behind a bush.

On another evening, we watched in fascination as a penguin leaped and cavorted in the waves off the Falkland Islands.

If you’ve been thinking about attending a Photochrome Meeting, we think any photographer will find something of interest here.

  1. Jerry Robinson Said,

For whatever it’s worth, I would like especially those who have encouraged my membership in Photochrome to know why I attend so few meetings. It has nothing to do with Photochrome. It has everything to do with the fact that I can’t hear what is going on. Even with my supposedly state-of-the-art hearing aids, I could not hear most of what our invited critic had to say about the images at the last meeting nor could I hear the comments of and discussions among the club members about the images. This makes it impossible for me to get much out of the meetings or to participate in them in any meaningful way.

I am not for a minute suggesting that Photochrome make any changes in its meetings. I sense that others are hearing just fine. In fact, I can’t even think of any changes that could be made to help my own situation. I don’t think the portable microphone is much help in the case of my own hearing loss since it is more a question of understanding dialogue than the level of the sound. Also, I think the portable microphone tends to stifle the informality and impromptu comments from the group. I believe the club is going in absolutely the right direction and will continue to attract new members with the new format. I do regret that I am unable to enjoy the meetings as I would have a few years ago, but I am still able to enjoy the other aspects of my photography hobby. And I certainly intend to keep up my membership.
